How to make a fire with a knife. A knife is shaped like a wedge. As part of the design include a large 2-foot tang. Watch the video below.
Draw the design of the knife onto a large piece of stainless steel. A partial tang is the most inconspicuous of the three and in my view the hardest to make. Hold a log upright place the knife across it taking advantage of any pre-existing splits or cracks and again whack that knife with that forearm-sized wood baton.
A 3-foot-by-4-inch-by-002-inch bar of steel is the perfect size. This will cause the spark to fly off the blade and on to the tinder. If you really want to try it the hard core way you can make your own cordage rather than using a shoelace.
Spindle fireboard bow which can be a small sapling and then use your shoelace. You need to make the following pieces. Strike the blade against a sharp hard rock and catch the spark in specially foraged tinder then nurse that spark into a coal.
Lay your tinder near to the site you made. You can start a fire by striking the blade of your closed pocketknife against the sharp edge of a rock. Selecting a good knife will make all the difference in the world with your fire starting capabilities.

In this design the tang is a rod that protrudes back from the blade and is completely hidden inside the handle secured with a rivet or two. The knife Im making here is a full tang knife. You could also use the knife to whittle and bow drill and start a fire with friction.
